Do you take my insurance for ABA therapy?

Accepted Answer

Yes, most likely. Behavioral Progression accepts all major commercial insurance plans and TRICARE for ABA therapy, and we are accepting new clients at every location: Lakeland, Tampa, Valrico, Wesley Chapel, St. Petersburg, and Nashville, TN.

We are in network with Aetna, Cigna, Florida Blue (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida), BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, UnitedHealthcare and Optum, TRICARE East (Humana Military), and CHAMPVA, and we accept BlueCard plans from other Blue Cross Blue Shield states. If your commercial plan is not in our network yet, we can usually still see your child through a single case agreement with your insurer.

Which insurance plans does Behavioral Progression accept?

Accepted Answer

We accept all major commercial insurance plans for ABA therapy. In Florida (Lakeland, Tampa, Valrico, Wesley Chapel, and St. Petersburg) we are in network with Aetna, Cigna, Florida Blue (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida), UnitedHealthcare and Optum Behavioral Health, TRICARE East (Humana Military), and CHAMPVA. In Nashville, Tennessee we are in network with BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare and Optum, TRICARE East, and CHAMPVA. We also accept BlueCard plans from other Blue Cross Blue Shield states, and we accept most employer and marketplace plans through a single case agreement when a plan is not yet in our network. Do not see your plan listed? Send us your card and we will check. We add new insurance networks regularly.

Question 3

What if my insurance plan is not in your network?

Accepted Answer

We can still help. For most commercial plans we can request a single case agreement (SCA), which lets your insurer cover ABA with Behavioral Progression at in-network or near in-network rates even if we are not yet contracted with your plan. Many plans also have out-of-network ABA benefits, and we can provide a superbill for you to submit for reimbursement. We offer a self-pay rate as well. Send us your insurance card and we will check all three options for you.

Question 4

Does my child need an autism diagnosis for insurance to cover ABA?

Accepted Answer

Most insurance plans require a formal autism spectrum disorder diagnosis from a licensed psychologist, developmental pediatrician, neurologist, or similar provider before they will authorize ABA therapy. If your child does not have a diagnosis yet, Behavioral Progression offers Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluations, and we can also connect you with diagnostic providers we work with in your area. Once the diagnosis is in place, we handle the insurance authorization for you.

How much will ABA therapy cost me with insurance?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your deductible and your plan's copay or coinsurance for outpatient behavioral health. Many families pay a flat copay per visit once their deductible is met. Before the first session we verify your benefits and give you a written estimate so there are no surprises. Our team handles authorizations, claims, and renewals so you do not have to.

Question 6

Does TRICARE cover ABA therapy?

Accepted Answer

Yes. TRICARE covers ABA therapy through the Autism Care Demonstration (ACD) for eligible beneficiaries with an autism diagnosis. Behavioral Progression is a TRICARE East network ABA provider serving military families in Tampa Bay, Polk County, and Nashville. TRICARE requires a referral and enrollment in the ACD, and we walk families through every step. We also accept CHAMPVA.

Question 7

Do I need a referral from my pediatrician to start ABA?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your plan. HMO plans and TRICARE Prime usually require a referral from your primary care provider. PPO and POS plans usually do not. When we verify your benefits we will tell you exactly what your plan requires, and if a referral is needed we will help you get it from your pediatrician.

How do I find out what my plan covers for ABA?

Send us a photo of the front and back of your insurance card through our contact form or by email to company@behavioralprogression.com. We will verify your ABA benefits, including your deductible, copay or coinsurance, and any referral or authorization requirements, and call you with the details, usually within one business day. There is no cost and no commitment.

Question 9

Is in-home or school ABA covered the same as clinic ABA?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, yes. ABA is billed by the service, not the location, so home, school, community, clinic, and telehealth sessions are all covered under the same benefit. Parent and caregiver training is covered the same way. A few plans limit telehealth, and we will tell you if yours does. Behavioral Progression offers clinic-based ABA in Lakeland and Brandon and in-home, school, and community ABA across Tampa Bay, Polk County, and Nashville.

Question 10

How long does it take to start ABA therapy after I reach out?

Accepted Answer

We are accepting new clients at all locations right now. After your benefits are verified, the initial assessment is typically scheduled within one to two weeks, and the insurance authorization for ongoing therapy usually takes one to three weeks after that. We keep you updated at every step and match your child with a BCBA at the location or setting that works best for your family.

Question 11

Do you accept Medicaid for ABA therapy?

Accepted Answer

We are not currently accepting Medicaid or Medicaid managed care plans for ABA therapy. If your child is on Medicaid, we encourage you to look into a commercial health plan through a parent's employer or the Health Insurance Marketplace. Most commercial plans cover ABA therapy for autism, and we are in network with all major commercial insurers. Once you have a commercial plan, send us your card and we will verify your ABA benefits for free.
